TEI’s 2024 Audits & Appeals Seminar, held in September at the Capital One Center in Tysons, Virginia, was a dynamic and highly anticipated event that brought tax professionals together for a deep dive into the rapidly evolving world of tax controversy. After a two-year break, TEI’s flagship seminar returned with a bang, offering participants a front-row seat to major transformations at the Internal Revenue Service and across state and local tax authorities.
The event provided an immersive and hands-on learning experience, with attendees choosing between two specialized tracks: Federal Tax Controversies and State & Local Tax Controversies. The first half of the seminar was packed with cutting-edge insights on federal tax matters, offering expert guidance on navigating IRS audits, appeals, and the ongoing modernization efforts reshaping the agency. The second half shifted focus to the increasingly complex world of state and local tax, where professionals tackled the most pressing issues in managing SALT audits and disputes.
All attendees enjoyed Capital One’s facilities, which provided a high-energy environment, with plenary sessions, interactive discussions, and ample networking opportunities. A special thanks to TEI member Brian Kaufman, vice chair of the Institute’s IRS Administrative Affairs Committee and lead on several IRS working groups, for facilitating TEI’s use of the Capital One space.
