As part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration at TEI’s Annual Conference held in New York City in October, TEI invited students interested in starting a career in tax to attend this historic meeting and experience networking with a variety of in-house tax professionals, sponsors, and other meeting participants.

Several TEI officials spoke about the importance of involving students in the TEI experience. Marji Gordon-Brown, president of TEI’s New York City Chapter, welcomed the students to the Big Apple. TEI’s executive director, Pilar Mata, told the gathering how important it was for the organization to engage students interested in the tax field and to let students know about opportunities available to them at TEI, including the ability to join the new Student Committee, which officially launched in 2023.

Josephine (Josie) Scalia, the head of tax for Nestlé Health Science as well as TEI’s senior vice president and next in line to be TEI’s international president (see Member Profile in the November/December issue), described the genesis of the student membership, which was first conceived in 2019. She noted that the Student Committee holds virtual events where students can learn about tax. In August it held its first International Tax Case Competition, which attracted student teams from several countries and was a way to get more people interested in tax, the way a “rising tide lifts all boats.”

Among the several students attending the Annual Conference were Joanne Fang, who attends HEC Montréal, and Henrique Mazzoccato, who attends New York University.
