Mark Caluori’s career in tax has been a journey of continuous learning and growth. From his early days at Deloitte and EY to his long tenure at Pan American Silver, where he is the vice president, tax, Caluori’s experiences have shaped him into a seasoned professional ready to tackle the ever-evolving challenges of the tax world—not to mention those of being an avid world traveler and a dad.

Early Career and Deloitte Experience

Caluori began his tax career at Deloitte, which marked his first foray into a purely tax-focused role. Before joining Deloitte, he had worked at smaller accounting firms handling a variety of accounting tasks, including some tax work. This transition to a specialized tax role at Deloitte was significant for Caluori, since it allowed him to develop his technical tax competencies. The firm’s emphasis on learning and skill enhancement, coupled with client interactions, enabled Caluori to build a strong foundation in tax, translating into excellent client service.

Transition to EY and Enhanced Capabilities

After Deloitte, Caluori joined EY’s Transaction Tax Advisory group. This role was a departure from his previous experience at Deloitte, demanding different knowledge and skill sets. At EY, Caluori worked exclusively on acquisition, disposition, and reorganization transactions, adding due diligence reporting and tax structuring to his technical capabilities. This experience proved invaluable when he transitioned out of public practice to Kodak and then to his current role at Pan American Silver, where his enhanced technical abilities and public company experience have been crucial.

After leaving EY, Caluori joined Kodak as a tax manager for its Canadian operations. Working for the Canadian subsidiary of a large multinational enterprise like Kodak provided Caluori with exposure to public company tax provision reporting and provided a good foundation for his current role at Pan American Silver, a Canadian mining company.

Thirteen Years at Pan American Silver

Caluori has led Pan American Silver’s tax function for nearly thirteen years, a testament to his dedication and the company’s dynamic environment. Pan American Silver operates mines in seven jurisdictions with eleven operations. “It’s a very diverse company, presenting new challenges every day, whether it’s an issue in Mexico, an audit in Peru, or something else,” he says. “This complexity keeps me engaged and happy.”

Additionally, Pan American’s supportive culture, where long-term employees feel connected and engaged, has contributed to Caluori’s long tenure.

Professional Growth Through TEI

Caluori’s involvement with TEI at both regional and chapter levels has significantly contributed to his professional growth. Caluori, a member of TEI’s Vancouver Chapter, says that he feels TEI offers a unique platform for tax professionals to connect, share experiences, and find solutions to common problems. Unlike his day job, where he interacts with nontax professionals, Caluori says, “TEI provides a community of peers facing similar challenges. This connectedness has not only enhanced my capabilities but also benefited my team, whom I encouraged to join TEI.”

Balancing Work and Personal Life

Outside of work, Caluori enjoys spending time with his family, especially his two young boys. His passion for hockey has led him to become a coach for his younger son’s hockey team. “I am passionate about hockey, having played it for many years, but now I have transitioned—as do many parents—into passing along what I know to my son,” he says.

Additionally, his younger son’s involvement in lacrosse has introduced Caluori to a new sport that he now enjoys watching and understanding.

Traveling is another activity Caluori and his family cherish. They make a point to go on a trip every year, providing an opportunity to disconnect from work and enjoy quality time together. Last year, they visited Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, exploring different cultures and cuisines. Australia, a destination they’ve always wanted to visit, is at the top of their future travel list.

Caluori’s career in tax has been marked by continuous learning, growth, and adaptability. From his foundational years at Deloitte to his enriching experience at EY and his longtime role at Pan American Silver, Caluori has navigated the complexities of the evolving tax world with dedication and skill. His involvement with TEI, coupled with a balanced personal life, underscores his commitment to professional excellence and personal fulfillment.
